Pottery Classes Begin April 21

Learn Beginning Wheel Throwing with local artist, Elyse Ward

Tuesdays & Thursdays, April 21 - June 11
In this 8-week course for adults, students will learn the basics of wheel throwing, including how to wedge, center, open, and throw clay. Students will move from simple cylinders to functional vessels, including mugs, bowls and vases. Each student will make work to take home.

The fee to register for this 8-week class is $300 and includes 25lbs of clay, a tool kit, glazes, and firing at the Prizery. Classes on Tuesdays from 6:30pm-8:30pm, with studio hours on Thursdays from 7:00pm-9:00pm.

Summer Theatre 2015 AUDITIONS

The Prizery is very excited to announce the upcoming auditions for Summer Theatre 2015.

Our shows this summer will include Aladdin, Jr., The Wizard of Oz and Anything Goes.

Those between the ages of 7 and 18 should register beginning at 1:30pm on Saturday, March 14 in The Prizery lobby. Auditions will begin at 2:00pm on a first come, first served basis.

  • Be prepared to sing a 16 bar section of Somewhere Over the Rainbow from The Wizard of Oz. Download Music Here!
  • Please bring an 8 x 10 headshot and a resume listing any theatre experience including school and church performances. 
  • Those auditioning may be asked to read a portion of the script. 
  • It is not necessary to memorize a monologue.
  • Some may be asked to come back at a later date to read for specific roles from either Aladdin, Jr, Wizard of Oz or Anything Goes.
  • You will be notified by email if further auditioning is needed.

TAP AUDITIONS - for local dancers ages 14 and older for Anything Goes will happen on Saturday, March 14, beginning at 2:00 at The Prizery. Everyone auditioning should arrive at 1:30pm to register. The audition will be completed by 4:00 p.m.  You will not be asked to sing or recite a monologue. The audition is for experienced tappers only and must be a minimum of 14 years of age.

Rehearsal Schedule ( subject to change)

  • Aladdin, Jr. - Monday and Thursday 4pm-6pm, beginning Monday March 30 (additional rehearsals the week of opening). Aladdin, Jr. opens Sunday, May 31.
  • Tap Dancers for Anything Goes will rehearse beginning in March. More details will be offered soon.
  • Wizard of Oz rehearsals begin Monday June 1. More details will be offered soon.

Performance Dates

  • Aladdin, Jr will be performed beginning Sunday, May 31 at 2:30pm and will continue each Saturday at 10:30am through June 27.
  • Wizard of Oz opens June 19 and runs through July 3 for 11 performances.
  • Anything Goes opens July 10 and runs through Sunday July 19 for 8 performances.

Lions Announce Bland Contest

Lions Club announces 2015 Bland competitionThe South Boston Lions Club will host its 2015 James A. Bland Memorial Music Contest in the Chastain Theater at The Prizery at 2 pm on Sunday, January 25. This year’s contest will feature sixteen students from Halifax and Pittsylvania Counties. Each student will perform a piece of classical music. The 2015 competition will feature students performing vocally, playing the violin and performing on The Prizery’s 9-foot concert grand Steinway piano.

One Vocal and one Instrumental winner will each win $300 cash. Second place winners will receive $100. They will then be eligible to compete on the District level for $100 U.S. Savings Bonds for winners and $50 U.S. Savings Bonds for runners-up. District winners will compete at the Lions Club State Convention next May. State winners win a $2,500 scholarship. First and second runners-up receive $2,000 and $1,500 scholarships, respectively. Fourth, fifth, and sixth place receive $1,000 cash.
