Lessons in Violin, Pottery, and Art

Violin
• Kevin and Bryan Matheson, professional musicians who won the Ibla International Competition in Italy and were recently presented at Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall in New York City, will teach violin to any age and skill level using the acclaimed Suzuki method. Hailed as “two perfect virtuosos” at their international performance debut, the brothers also perform in the Rainier Trio. Both are faculty from Virginia Tech’s Arts Initiative.
Parents are strongly encouraged to attend all lessons, especially for young students. Rental violins are available. Length of lessons is determined by age and level. Tuition is paid by the 19-week semester: $565.25 for 30-minute private lessons; may be paid in installments. Pottery
• Elyse Ward, of Sutherlin, teaches separate pottery classes to both children and adults. Ward studied studio art at Virginia Tech and focused on ceramics and sculpture. Her art reaches beyond traditional ceramics, keeping functionality in mind, but venturing into the world of pop and kitsch.
The adult class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:00-7:00 pm; $80 for 8 weeks of class. Plus $15 per 25-pound bag of clay. The children’s class meets Mondays and Wednesdays, 5:00 - 6:30 p.m.; $60 for 8 weeks of class. Plus $15 per 25-pound bag of clay. To sign up, call The Prizery at 572-8339. Watercolor Workshop
• C. Tanner Jensen, of Vernon Hill, will teach a one-day watercolor workshop designed to be exciting and beneficial to the first-time watercolorist and to more experienced painters. A variety of materials will be demonstrated, along with various papers. All materials are provided, but participants who have experience are encouraged to bring brushes, paints, palettes and an example of their work. Adults and serious teenagers. Saturday, September 12; 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. with a half-hour for lunch. $50 plus $15 for materials. To sign up, call The Prizery at 572-8339.
Jensen has considerable teaching and exhibit experience. She holds a BFA in painting from Northern Arizona University and an MFA in painting from East Carolina University. Her work has won many awards

Mixed Media Workshop
• Jensen will teach a one-day mixed media workshop. A wide range of media and techniques will be demonstrated. This workshop show how creating can be fun and playful while making meaningful art. All skill levels. All materials are supplied. Students are encouraged to bring any materials they want to use in addition to those supplied. Adults and serious teenagers. Sept. 19; 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. with a half-hour for lunch. $50 plus $15 for materials. To sign up, call The Prizery at 572-8339.
Collage Workshop
• Jensen will teach a one-day collage workshop to focus on color, composition and contrast. Photo transfer techniques will be demonstrated as will a variety of media. The instructor will show how you can turn bits and pieces into art. All skill levels. All materials are supplied. Students are asked to bring at least two photocopies of photographs they want to transfer and any materials they want to incorporate into a collage. Adults and serious teenagers. Saturday, Oct. 3; 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. with a half-hour for lunch. $50 plus $15 for materials. To sign up, call The Prizery at 572-8339.
