227th Anniversary of The Crossing of the Dan
February 8-9, 2008, at South Boston, Virginia
January 7, 2008

Dear Friends,

The Berryman Green Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and the Dan River Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution are hosting the 227th Anniversary Celebration of The Crossing of the Dan (River) in historic downtown South Boston, Virginia.

The commemorative events are being planned for Friday, February 8th and Saturday, February 9th, 2008, at The Prizery, located at 700 Bruce Street, South Boston, Virginia.

The "Retreat to the Dan" that began in January 1781, at the Cowpens Battlefield in South Carolina, had transformed into a "Race to the Dan" after a Council of War at Guilford Court House in present day Greensboro, North Carolina. General Nathanael Greene’s crossing of the Dan River on February 14, 1781, at Irwin’s and Boyd’s ferries in Halifax County, Virginia, marked the beginning of the end for the Cornwallis led British army.

On Friday, February 8, sixth-grade students from Halifax County Middle School will present the story through verse and song. D’oyle Moore will appear as General Greene during the morning and afternoon performances that will be held in the Chastain Theater in The Prizery.

On Saturday, February 9, the DAR/SAR will host a breakfast beginning at 8:30 AM in the banquet hall on the upper level of The Prizery. The morning program will begin at approximately 10:00 AM and will feature the Guilford Court House Fife and Drum Corps,

remarks by Halifax County/South Boston officials, recognition of student competition winners, a wreath laying ceremony, and a pilgrimage to the Boyd’s Ferry site. Lunch will be available at The Prizery.

Following lunch, Larry G. Aaron, author of The Race to the Dan—The Retreat That Rescued the American Revolution, will speak. Several visiting re-enactors will also make an appearance. The day’s activities will conclude with a reception held at the home of Bob and Luanne Giles, 1204 Washington Avenue, South Boston, VA.

I do hope that you will make plans to join us during this celebration. Please complete the enclosed response form and return to me by February 1, 2008. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to call me at 434-470-1350 or e-mail at tsraab@comcast.net.
